Frequently asked moving questions
Real answers to the questions our coordinators hear every day.

General
How long does an interstate move take?
Transit time depends on distance, route, and service tier. Most cross-country dedicated moves take 4–7 days; consolidated long-haul moves take 7–14 days. Your senior coordinator confirms a delivery window with your written estimate.
How do I choose a moving company?
Look for active FMCSA registration (USDOT and MC numbers), written estimates, clear insurance coverage, and transparent policies. Avoid any company that gives a quote without an inventory walkthrough or asks for a large deposit upfront. AmeriSafe publishes all of these: our authority is verifiable on FMCSA SAFER, every quote is put in writing, and our refund, claims, and carrier-disclosure policies are published on this site.
Are you a carrier or a broker?
Both, and that dual license works in your favor. AmeriSafe is licensed by the FMCSA as an interstate motor carrier and as a household-goods broker (USDOT 3341650 · MC 1066696). Because we run moves ourselves, we know exactly what to demand from any carrier we place your move with. And because we can price your move two ways, on our own equipment or with a preferred carrier at volume rates, you get the better number as your written estimate. Either way, your senior coordinator runs the move and the carrier hauling your goods is named on your paperwork before move day.
What states do you service?
All 50 states. Most active corridors are between the Northeast, Florida, Texas, the West Coast, and the Mountain West, but we run moves to and from anywhere in the continental U.S.
How far in advance should I book?
For peak summer dates, 4–6 weeks in advance is ideal. For off-peak dates (mid-month winter), 2–3 weeks is usually sufficient. We hold last-minute capacity year-round and can typically dispatch within 48–72 hours of booking.
Pricing
How is moving cost calculated?
Your price is based on the truck space your inventory actually needs (not weight guesses), plus distance, specialty items, packing services, and dates. No in-home sales visit required: walk your home on a quick video call or send an itemized list, and your coordinator locks your estimate in writing. Every cubic foot you do not move is a cubic foot you do not pay for.
What is a binding estimate?
A binding estimate is a fixed total price for the inventory and services listed, locked in writing before the truck rolls, it is the FMCSA's own term, and it is enforceable. The number you sign is the number you pay at delivery, regardless of what your shipment actually weighs. If your inventory changes, the estimate is revised by a signed addendum before move day, never at the curb. Non-binding estimates work differently: the final bill rides on actual weight, and federal rules let the mover collect up to 110% of the estimate at delivery. We quote binding on most qualifying interstate moves.
What is included in the price?
Everything on your estimate, and your estimate itemizes everything. Transportation, labor, packing services you choose, specialty crating, building access (stairs, long carries, shuttles), and storage-in-transit are surveyed and priced as line items before you sign. If it is on the estimate, it is in the locked total; nothing appears for the first time on the final bill. See our binding pricing explained page for how it works.
What can change my price?
Only items or services not on the original signed estimate. If you add furniture after the estimate is signed, change the move date, request packing not in the original quote, or have undisclosed specialty items, the price may need to be adjusted via an addendum.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes, military and veteran, senior, and corporate-account discounts. Ask your coordinator when you book.
Do I need to tip the crew?
Tipping is appreciated but not required. Customary tips are $30–$60 per crew member, paid at the end of loading or unloading.
Protection & Insurance
How are my belongings protected?
Released coverage (60¢ per pound, per item) is the federal default and is included free on every move. Full-value protection is available at additional cost, recommended for households with high-value items. Custom crating and white-glove handling are available for fragile and specialty pieces.
What is full-value protection?
Full-value protection means we are responsible for the actual replacement value of any item we damage or lose, up to the declared coverage amount. It is significantly more comprehensive than the federal default released coverage.
What happens if something is damaged?
Note any visible damage on the bill of lading at delivery. For damage discovered after the crew leaves, you have 9 months from delivery to file a written claim. Most claims are resolved within 30–45 days. Claims are rare on AmeriSafe moves.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. FMCSA registered as both an interstate motor carrier and a household-goods broker (USDOT 3341650 · MC 1066696), verify us anytime on the FMCSA SAFER website. Every move is covered by cargo and liability coverage that meets or exceeds federal requirements, whether it runs on AmeriSafe equipment or with a vetted carrier in our network. Full-value protection is available on every move.
Do you provide certificates of insurance?
Yes, free of charge, typically issued within 24 hours of booking. Additional insureds (your buildings) are added at no charge. We have most major NYC, Boston, DC, San Francisco, Chicago, and Miami building managers on file.
During & After the Move
How do I prepare my home for movers?
We send a prep checklist when you book. The basics: pre-pack any non-fragile personal items, label rooms, set aside specialty items for the crew chief to flag, clear pathways, and have parking confirmed at both addresses.
What paperwork will I sign?
Bill of lading (the transport contract), inventory list (what is on the truck), and a delivery receipt at the destination. We provide everything; you review and sign.
What if my new place isn't ready?
No problem. We offer climate-controlled storage in transit, billed as part of your written quote. We hold inventory and redeliver on the date you specify.
What can't I move?
Hazardous materials (propane, paint, ammunition, fireworks, gasoline), perishables (food, plants on long hauls), and pets. Your coordinator will share the complete restricted list.
Will the same crew load and unload?
On dedicated express moves, yes, same crew and truck from origin to destination. On consolidated long-haul moves and moves placed with a partner carrier, loading and unloading teams can differ. Your coordinator tells you exactly who is handling each end before move day, and the hauling carrier is named on your paperwork.
Local Moves
Do you do local moves?
AmeriSafe specializes in interstate moves, but we do operate local within the metros where we are based. For local-only moves under 50 miles, we may refer you to a vetted partner if our schedule is full.
Are local moves priced differently?
Local moves are typically priced hourly or as a flat price for the loading and unloading day. Interstate moves are quoted with written estimates, binding on most qualifying moves. Ask your coordinator for the pricing model that fits your scenario.
Long-Distance
How does long-distance pricing work?
Long-distance interstate moves are priced with a written estimate based on inventory volume and distance, binding on most qualifying moves. Once signed, the price does not change unless you add items or services to the move.
How long does a cross-country move take?
Dedicated express service: 4–7 days. Consolidated long-haul: 7–14 days. Your coordinator confirms a specific delivery window with your written estimate.
What if I need expedited delivery?
Express dedicated service ships your shipment alone on a single truck, no co-loading. Pickup and delivery dates are firm and most coast-to-coast express moves complete in 4–5 days.
Storage
Do you offer storage?
Yes, climate-controlled, monitored storage. We pick up at your origin, store for as long as you need (a week, a month, or a year), and redeliver to your destination on the date you specify.
How is storage priced?
Storage is billed monthly based on volume. We quote storage as part of your written move estimate so the entire pickup-storage-redelivery cycle is one predictable price.
Can I access my belongings during storage?
Yes. We schedule access visits at the storage facility with 48 hours advance notice. We can also redeliver specific items if you need something out of storage before the full redelivery.
Specialty (Piano, Antique, Art)
Do you specialize in piano moving?
Yes. AmeriSafe has certified piano specialists trained on uprights, baby grands, and concert grands. We use custom skids, climate-controlled trailers, and crews experienced with stairs, narrow doorways, and split-level homes.
Can you move antiques?
Yes. Custom-built crates, climate-controlled trailers, museum-grade padding, and full-value protection on every antique. We have moved 18th-century furniture, Tiffany lamps, marble tables, and grandfather clocks across the country.
Do you move fine art?
Yes, custom crating, climate-controlled trailers, conservator-friendly handling, and coordination with galleries and installers. Our fine-art tier is the most careful service we offer.
Can you move a pool table?
Yes. We disassemble the slate, transport in climate-controlled trailers, and reassemble (including refelting) at the destination. Most pool table moves run $650–$1,300 in our written quote.
